Behind the Wheel

by Betty Retzer

Happy April.  I hope everyone had a very nice Easter and that you all are ready for fun in the sun with our tops down!

I want to thank the San Joaquin Valley Miata Club for once again hosting a wonderful event.  Their 8th Annual Poker Run was held March 15 - 16 and we had a great time.  Several of DMC members were in attendance - Mike and Pat Bell, Joey Jose and Cheryl Dayanghirang, Kris Kells, John and Mary Diamond, Graeme Kinsey and of course, Bob and I.  SJVMC provided a little something in the way of weather for everyone, - we had snow, hail, rain and sleet - oh, yes, even sunshine.  Our own Kris "I never win anything" Kells needed help carrying all of her raffle goodies back to her car.  She unselfishly shared her winnings with the rest of us not so fortunate.  Thanks Kris.  Ask John and Mary what new tricks they learned while at the dinner table.  I have pictures!

Alex is in the shop.  Again.  His coil went bad and the good news is that it was covered by warranty.  The bad news is that there was slight body damage during the warranty work but the good news is that it was fixed and he looks good.  The bad news is that the body shop forgot to fasten one of the tie down straps on the rear of the soft top so that is now being done.  I have had 3 different loaner cars (all Miatas--current one an automatic :( ) and I got to sit in the new Titanium.  It is really, really nice looking but I still love my SE the best.  Now if Bob's new one would only get here!

Here's looking to a great month with some fun events coming up!  See you all there.

April, 2002

We've received notification from Serious Auto of the opportunity for another group buy.  This one is for M1 owners only.  Their retail price for the Cibie 7" round headlamps is $105.00.  If we can round up 10 members interested in a buy, the price per member for a set will be $85.00, shipped to your home or office for free.  Email me at bretzer@pacbell.net if you're interested and I'll keep you advised if we have enough folks for a deal with them.  Although they're looking for a minimum of 10 sales, on the recent Oris Windstop deal, they did it with 5, so I'll let you know when I've gathered up all the interested parties.

Looking through my archives, I also came across this aftermarket product.  Thought I would post it for it's curiously "unique" value!

Watch this space in the coming months.  We have started a new Membership Drive Program.  Whoever refers the most new members in 2002 will be awarded a free membership for 2003.  Starting in January, make sure your name is on the "referred by" line on the membership form.  We will be posting the tally each month here in this spot.

Board Room Briefs

by Betty Retzer

Our April board meeting was held on the 2nd.  It was to be a short meeting because we were to have a guest speaker, but he got caught in the traffic snarls on Vasco Road and was not able to make it to the meeting.  We hope that he will try again.

Script Miata pins have been ordered and will take about a month to get here.  I have not had any replies to my responses about our door plaques.  I am still following up on that.  Graeme Kinsey is ordering a banner with our logo for us to take to events.  I am still working on name tags.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:30 p.m.  Our next meeting is scheduled for May 7 at 7 p.m. at Roundtable Pizza in Brentwood.  Please join us.

Delta Folks

Don & Bev McLain

Don and Bev grew up in Tennessee.  They met at a church picnic in the summer before Don's junior year at Middle Tennessee State University.  They married 1 year later.  In June of this year, they will celebrate their 39th wedding anniversary.  They lived in New Orleans for 3 years before coming to California in 1974, where they have lived in Danville for 28 years.  They have a son-in-law, daughter, and three grandsons who live in Minnesota.

Don's love affair with cars started in high school while he worked at the family owned Chrysler-Plymouth dealership of his father, uncles and grandfather.  He enjoyed the muscle car years of the 60's.  Chrysler 300 and ram tube induction systems were great attractions plus a first convertible.  Don acquired a 1951 Plymouth Cranbrook,  He nosed it, decked it,  added a '57 Plymouth grill,  spun aluminum disc,  a new top and a red paint job to complete it

After the move to California in '74, a series of cars were in the McLain family including a 1989 Mazda MX-6 GT with Turbo and variable suspension. This was Don's first appreciation for the Mazda family of cars. He drove it 110,000 miles with no problems.  Bev's '91 Dodge Shadow ES convertible with turbo was a joy for 7 years and nearly 70,000 miles, then time to trade.  A turnabout, Chrysler LeBaron convertible filled the bill for 2 years but no real fun.  Then in '97 the choice of a new convertible - the new Sebring by Chrysler or maybe something else.  Yep you guessed it, they went to Codirolli Motors to check out the Mercury Capri convertible they had remembered test-driving some years before.  The salesperson said " we don't make that anymore, BUT, you can go next door to our Mazda dealership and check out the Miata".

BOOM! This was fun.  They leased a '97 Montego Blue for three years. Bev would only consider an automatic.  Don compromised and said O.K.  Three years and 51,000 miles later, it was Don's turn to pick out the next Miata.  Bev was in the bed with the flu, Don came home and said, "you need to go down with me tomorrow and pick up the new car".  "By the way, it's a stick this time".  Don chose a 2000 Brilliant Black with black top and upholstery and the appearance package.  Bev said, "you got stick, I can shift 'em or tear 'em up".  She does just fine now.  They have had a great time in BAMA and Delta clubs.  They enjoy organizing and attending events.  Most noted is their annual Full Moon Fun Cruise.  Don got the idea for it after being tapped in the rear of the '97 by a DUI person 5 years ago.  As he stood waiting for the police to come on that beautiful August evening with a full moon out, he thought, "This would make a beautiful driving time".  Thus the Full Moon Fun Run came to be.  Poker runs and Target runs are also favorites.

As Don and Bev's tag line implies driving their Miata--SSEEYYAA!!

MAZDA MIATA MEDIA QUOTES

"I bought the 2001 Miata because I thought the evolutionary improvements in
power output, chassis stiffness and tightness of the convertible top would
result in a quieter and smoother freeway ride without giving up any of the
tossability of the 1990 model.  I have not been disappointed."
Autoweek's
2001 Buyer's Guide.

"When it comes to 'best bang for the buck' roadster, the Miata is the
hands-down winner for me."
Scott Mead, Motor Trend.

"If there has ever been a sports car that is dependable as the morning
sunrise, it's the Miata."
Sports Compact Car.

"The reason the Mazda Miata is almost a perennial Automobile Magazine
All-Star is simple: There is no other sports car that offers the same
combination of engaging personality, practicality, affordability, and sheer
driving pleasure."
Automobile Magazine.

Well, if these little tidbits weren't enough to instill even more pride in your Miata, then perhaps you haven't driven it in a while.  So I dare you - grab the keys and go for a drive - perhaps you have forgotten how to really "Zoom-Zoom!"  I have to end this article now, as I have some 'bonding' to do with my car.  See you out there!

Our newest DMC member, Leni Metro, has stuff on his site that'll make your Miata shine!!
