daily driving. My Kumho V700 Victoracer race tires, on the other
hand, have a wear rating of only 50 - they will not last nearly as long,
but this lower rating means a softer composition, which in turn means
better grip.
The deeper your tread design, the more water you will displace and the
more forgiving the tire is on the road. Those Kumho race tires are
not recommended for daily driving mostly because you will wear them out
quickly - but they are also quite squirmy on our city streets and rather
bumpy. A Toyo T1S is a solid tire that offers a great ride and
dependability for that daily commute. Touring tires usually have
concentric lines of various numbers (as with those Falkens) -
these are even more soft feeling to the driver, but won't take as crisp
a turn.
A Toyo T1S is in my opinion one of the best all-season tires that still
retains high performance characteristics for those twisties we
Miataphiles are so addicted to. The Falken Zieks (spelling?) are
great for touring and the occasional twisty run taken at a moderate
speed. If you plan to race or just take some laps at the
racetrack, I recommend either the Toyo RA1 tires or the Kumho V700
Victoracers (both are the only two options available to Spec Miata
racers, by the way - and for a reason - they're great tires!).
There are many places on the World Wide Web that can direct you to tire
distributors and help you select the tire for you. I suggest you
check out:
http://www.miata.net/garage
and take a look at some of the posted tire information there. This
website is a seemingly never-ending pool of Miata knowledge.
Armed now with at least the beginning of a new understanding of tires
and wheels, I look forward to seeing you out there on the many wonderful
Delta Miata Club fun runs! Zoom on!!!
